Resolution is only one part of video quality

Resolution tells you how many pixels make up each frame, but perceived quality also depends on bitrate, codec, frame rate, compression, source sharpness and display size. Converting a blurry 720p source to 4K produces a larger frame, not genuine 4K detail.

720p: efficient for small screens

720p remains useful for phones, previews, training material and situations where storage or bandwidth is limited. It requires fewer pixels than 1080p or 4K, so the resulting file can be easier to store and transfer.

1080p: the general-purpose choice

Full HD 1080p is a strong default for laptops, desktops, presentations and many TVs. It gives substantially more detail than 720p without the storage demands associated with 1440p and 4K. If you do not have a special requirement, 1080p is often the safest target when the source provides it.

1440p and 4K: useful when the source supports them

Higher resolutions are most valuable on larger or high-density displays and when the source was uploaded at comparable quality. 4K contains four times as many pixels as 1080p, which can substantially increase processing, storage and transfer requirements.

Do not upscale just for the label

A converter should normally preserve or reduce source resolution rather than inflate it. If a video only exists at 720p, selecting 4K would not restore missing detail. The best practical choice is the highest resolution that the source actually provides and your destination device meaningfully benefits from.
